I like S. Krishna's approach ("unofficially official") to the Complete Booker Challenge. She's decided to do her own thing, and read the shortlisted books from 1990 to present.
The actual Complete Booker Challenge is to read all the winners from 1969 to present. Not sure this is a challenge I officially want to join, but I might opt for the unofficial strategy. Then again, it might not hurt to join, as there's no time limit, and I've already got a good start on reading the prize winners.
Also, I'm pleased to see how many reviews are already posted on the Complete Booker Challenge site -- useful! I don't like reading too much about a book before I've read it, but if I'm trying to decide whether or not to read it, the reviews can be helpful.
My unofficial strategy for the Booker challenge is to read whichever ones appeal to me and are available at our local library. So far, I've been impressed with the number of Booker prize winners they have in their collection.
I'm still interested in pursuing some of the books from this year's Booker shortlist, but I know that they'll be hard to get at the library. Might just have to wait.
Meanwhile, I'm also eagerly anticipating Byatt's Possession and Atwood's The Blind Assassin because I've heard so many good things about both. And I think the library has them!
I never knew there was such a world out there of reading challenges!
ReplyDeleteI'm working on reviewing some graphic novels for my own not-yet-existing blog. I'll need to go back and re-read all those I did this summer... It'll be useful for me at least, just so I can remember each one.
Man, NEITHER DID I. Dude there are so many book bloggers out there, it blows my mind. When you look at the reading some of 'em do, hundreds of books a year.
ReplyDeleteAnd there are GLBTQ challenges, classics challenges, fantasy challenges, you name it. It all gets a bit crazy! I'm going easy.
It's just fun to know that they are OUT THERE. All those wonderful bookaholics. :)
I'm glad you decided to join! The challenge has been around for about 2 years now, which is how we've come to accumulate a nice store of reviews. And we've branched beyond reading winners, lots of people read & review the shortlisted works as well.
ReplyDeleteThe best challenges are the ones with no time limit. Just read as much as you want, when you want!
This one suits me perfectly because I had already decided I wanted to read the Booker prize winners anyway... now I have an excuse!
ReplyDeleteJ* -- I look forward to reading your reviews and then going out and buying the graphic novels you recommend! You know it'll happen.
