The Scottish Burka

That's how I've heard someone refer to the head-to-toe covering required for going outside in western Scotland in summer.  This is how I dress for gardening between May and September.  It's a bit stuffy on warm days, and talking to the neighbors is more difficult when you've got a bag over your head.

Still, it's better than the alternative - being covered in tiny red itchy bites that swell up and itch for several days... caused by the famous Scottish midges.  They like cloudy, still, cool damp days (which is most of the time) so when the sun comes out or a breeze picks up, we have a merciful break from the horrible wee beasties.

So far this summer our garden has produced rhubarb and strawberries.  Hey, I think a crumble is in order.

  1. Aah. Midges. I may whine about 100+ degree days, but, I must admit, the world is rather midge-free here.
