Autumn reading

Beautiful morning in Oban! I got into town early this morning, and I love seeing the shops just starting to open, people hurrying to work, kids getting to school...

It's so peaceful and still, despite the activity, like everything is happening behind glass. Between the rain showers the weather can be really lovely recently, and the air has that spicy autumn freshness.

For any of you that know me, you'll know that the above statements are highly uncharacteristic. I've never been a morning person. But for some reason, getting up earlier to get to work now that we've moved doesn't seem so bad. I'm trying to appreciate the light mornings for as long as we still have them; they won't be here much longer.

I'm reading The Woman in White, a perfect book to read on windy fall nights. It's got escaped psychiatric patients, graveyards, eccentric invalids, beautiful young ladies, and muttering villagers. Don't you think that sounds like a good book for autumn? With the wind howling outside, it's suitably creepy when Our Hero stakes out a graveyard at dusk waiting for the strange woman in white to appear.

Before that, I raced through The Da Vinci Code. I like to take my time with bestsellers and not read them right away. About five years usually does it :)

And I loved it. It was gripping, to say the least. No matter how impossibly connected all the plot details were, and all the symbols suggesting hidden meanings in everything... I enjoyed the whole romp. The only slight disappointment for me was the romantic interest between the two lead characters at the very end of the book. It really did feel tacked on, and pointless as well.

No matter! The book was exciting, fast-paced, bizarre and only that one tiny step away from completely unbelievable.

While speed reading Dan Brown, I took my time reading The Periodic Table. It was one of those books I don't want to read too fast, because they're too good.

Always the hardest books to write about.

In other news, we're getting prepared for winter in the new house: Andy's checking the insulation in the roof, re-lagging the pipes, and trying to find the water shut-off. I'm thinking about making thermal curtains, tea cosies, Christmas ornaments, and other odds and ends. Does it suddenly feel like winter is coming?
