Here's a puzzler

Work this one out, will you!

Em is moving to the country, but she still works at her office job in town. She will now have a 12-mile commute in to the office, where she works 9:00 to 5:00 every weekday.

She doesn't have a driving licence or a car, but she does have a bicycle. However, the commute is along narrow country roads where traffic drives very fast. There is a bike path along some of the route, but it's not continuous, and several miles would be on dangerous, fast moving roads with no hard shoulder. Cyclists have been killed on these roads in the recent past and Em has no desire to take her life in her hands in order to get to work.

She would ideally like to take the bus to work and back, but she's looked at the bus schedule and discovered a slight problem. Getting to work in the morning is fine -- a bus leaves from the main road (a ten minute walk from Em's house) at 8:19 am arriving in town by 8:50, which leaves Em just enough time to walk quickly to her office.

However, getting home again is not so straightforward. The last local bus that stops near Em's house leaves the town at 3:45 pm, full of school children, and Em works until 5:00. There's another option: a long-distance coach leaves the town at 4:40 and would stop near her house. But again, this doesn't suit her job's current hours.

Local buses run hourly throughout the day until 3:45. Indeed, buses keep running until past 10:00 pm, but don't go as far as Em lives. Here's a summary of the weekday bus schedule:

Barcaldine --> Oban
Dep. 0819, 0928, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1512, 1629

Oban --> Barcaldine
Dep. 0710, 0750, 0920, 1020, 1120, 1220, 1320, 1420, 1545

Buses from Oban to Benderloch, 4 miles from Em's house, continue until nearly 9:00 pm. The schedule continues as follows:

Oban --> Benderloch
Dep. 1705, 1745, 1910, 2055

So Em can get to Benderloch, 4 miles from home, quite easily by bus. She can even stop by the grocery store after work and pick up a few things for dinner before catching the 5:45 bus. But how is she going to travel the last 4 miles to get home? There are no buses or trains, and only 2.3 of the 4 miles are safe to travel on foot or bicycle. Additionally, the local buses do not carry bicycles so a one-way bike ride is not possible.

Does she a) quit her job and look for work closer to home; b) adjust her job's hours to fit within the bus schedule; c) get her driving licence and drive to work every day; d) cycle to work; or e) hitchhike from Benderloch?

Help!

  2. This sounds like one of those trick questions with no correct answer. It depends on how inconvenienced she (or her supervisor) would be if she could adjust her hours. Cycling and hitchhiking sound too dangerous. She may have strongly consider the car option, which may be expensive upfront, but most convenient (and safest) in the long run.

    Keep us posted, and stay safe!

    Adjusting her hours would be one (possible) solution.

    Could she arrange to travel with someone local to Benderloch in the morning and take a taxi from B'loch back home in the evening? Yeah, I guess - no taxis either?

    Any possibility of carpooling with a coworker? What a sucky situation!

  5. Thanks everyone! I'm working on changing my working hours so that I won't have to rely on a car every day. As it is now, I don't have my UK driving licence but my husband drives and we have a car... so I might be relying on him for the near future.
