Ullapool and my first Fèis

The Highlands treated us to the most glorious weekend of the year. Anyone who thinks that summer is the time to visit/travel in Scotland has clearly not experienced springtime here.

It was also my first time at a fèis -- a celebration of traditional Gaelic music and culture focused on instruction and workshops. (Pronounced 'faysh'.)

Most of the fèisean around Scotland are for school kids, but Fèis Rois put on an adult fèis in Ullapool every May.

I entered fiddle for complete beginners... and it was really fun. I can tell you my left hand fingertips are still numb.

We also attended several fantastic concerts and a couple fun singing groups. There seems to be an infinite number of traditional Scottish tunes out there! We'll see if I ever get good enough to play any of them.

  1. May in Scotland makes me think about falling in love (and, as a friend there always mentioned, sunny May tricks people into thinking that summer will come as well). I can't beleive that it's been 15 years since I climbed Suilven, for your pictures of the area cause such an emotional response.
    Enjoy!
