A lot of people seem to be joining in this weekend's Bloggiesta -- a blog improvement party going on over at Maw Books Blog. We're away this weekend for our anniversary so I don't think I'll be online at all. Darn!
But now that I've started thinking about it, there ARE some things I'd like to do to the old bloggy blog... If anyone has suggestions or bits of advice I would be very happy to hear them.
Here are my ideas:
1. Add a nice header image. So many blogs have nice visual headers -- A Striped Armchair, Shelf Love, or Park Benches and Book Ends, for example. Mine is too boring the way it is!
2. A new layout template? Or just an improvement on the colors? It needs... something.
3. Improve the labels or put together some pages? My organisation isn't really that great. I'm not sure what to do about it though. My blog started out as a totally personal blog and gradually morphed into a book blog... what do I do with all the old stuff or unrelated random stuff? Just leave it alone?
4. Add to the 'About me' bit. This is hard -- I don't want to say too much, but people might want to know a little bit about me up front. This is tricky. What do you want to know about me?
I'm sorry to be missing the party, but I hope I can get some ideas and tips from others who are joining in and making their own improvements.
This could be the time to start dabbling in CSS and HTML, and really customize your look.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to do a bit of renovation now and then, and things like labels/categories often need pruning after a while. When I migrated my blog to Wordpress in January, I found the 2009 Blog Improvement Project very helpful, especially topics 4,6,7,8, and 10.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed your anniversary celebration!
Ooh, I see you've already made a few of these changes. Love your new header image and (as I recall?) more muted palette. Happy anniversary weekend - we're off on our delayed honeymoon, so relationshippy VK for both of us! :-)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the new header and layout! Well done :) I hope you have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteI have had a blog for almost three years and still no pretty header! I love yours.
ReplyDeleteJ* - Dabbling in CSS? Yeah, no pressure...!
ReplyDeleteLaura, thanks for the link. Looks like lots of useful ideas.
Emily, Thanks! Your blog is the picture of elegance and simplicity! (Trying to hide my envy)
Nymeth, Thank you, it was a bit of a rushed job!
Shelley, It wasn't as difficult as I thought it might be!
The header is beautiful. Happy anniversary!
