These were questions we asked ourselves on Thursday while on the lovely island of Colonsay for a couple days holiday. In the middle of January. Yes, we are that crazy.

The Strand
We enjoyed our couple nights stay, though Thursday's weather was a bit of an adventure. Even the locals we spoke with expressed some skepticism about whether the ferry would run on Friday, leaving us to contemplate being stuck on the island for the weekend, which really wouldn't have been so bad. We had books, food, telly, hot water, and a warm bed; who needs clean underwear?
Colonsay has a shop, open every day except Thursday afternoon apparently, when we stopped by for some supplies after a tiring bike ride around the island. Despite the shop being closed for business, the shopkeeper let us in and told us to help ourselves.
The island also has a hotel, which was closed for the winter, a brewery, which was closed, a restaurant, which we couldn't find and was probably closed, a bookshop which was closed but which the owners would open up if you phoned them... anyway, you get the idea.

What else would we want to do but ride around on our bikes in a howling gale?! It was gorgeous scenery-wise. We saw the Strand, a tidal passageway to the nearby island of Oronsay, the world's most scenic and affordably priced golf course at £5 for a round, crashing waves, stunning rock formations and fluffy, impervious sheep.

The cup of hot chocolate and the hot bath afterwards were all the more appreciated.

Imagine our dismay when we woke up on Friday morning to clear blue sky, warm sunshine and placid seas. Unfortunately it was our day to leave.
