Only in Scotland - best of the news

Some recent memorable headlines from the Oban Times. Come on, say it along with me: Only in Scotland!

(from 3 December 2009)

Minister under fire from tweed workers

Environment minister R-- C-- has come under fire from Harris Tweed workers after criticising people wearing tweed garments in order to 'look the part' of Victorian Highland lairds.

Back road potholes damage at least six cars

Potholes on the back road from Oban to Connel have been causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage to cars -- including an Oban councillor's.
A large hole near the access to K-- Farm, which... had spread almost halfway across the road, caused £1,000 worth of damage to one driver's car.... "I burst two wheels and a tyre and damaged my front bumper."

Tesco 'not sinking'

Despite rumours among staff and customers Tesco bosses are denying there is any problem with the foundations of its store in Oban....
A spokeswoman for Tesco said: 'There has been some flooding in the car park and we carried out some remedial works to solve the problem, but I can tell you categorically the store is not sinking.'

Public vote decides name for new ship

A public vote has overwhelmingly declared Finlaggan as the favourite name for Islay's new ferry.

I'd bet that Tesco actually is sinking -- the supermarket and the surrounding shopping centre are built on what used to be a loch at one time! I wouldn't be surprised if the water of Lochavullin is trying to reclaim its former home.
